We are proud to announce that Professor Phoebe Koundouri has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as Co-Chair of the Independent Group of Scientists responsible for drafting the 2027 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR).

The 2027 GSDR is of critical importance, as it will be the final report before the 2030 deadline of the UN Agenda 2030, offering evidence-based guidance to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Published every four years, the GSDR is the UN’s flagship science-policy report that connects science, policy, and society. Building on the legacy of The Future is Now (2019) and Times of Crisis, Times of Change (2023), the 2027 report will provide actionable recommendations for governments, the private sector, and civil society worldwide.

The Independent Group of Scientists brings together experts from across all world regions and disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, economics, law, business, and policy. Their work will be supported by a UN task team comprising the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), UNESCO, UNEP, UNDP, UNCTAD, and the World Bank. Importantly, Professor Koundouri was nominated for this distinguished role by the European Research Council (ERC), underlining her international recognition and scientific leadership.

The first official Member State briefing launching the process took place on September 19, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
