1st DEDS School "Ethical and Legal Aspects of Data"

The European Joint Doctorate in "Data Engineering for Data Science" (DEDS) jointly organized by Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), Aalborg Universitet (Denmark), and the Athena Research Centre (Greece), held the 1st DEDS SCHOOL "Ethical and Legal Aspects of Data" on April 4-8 April 2022, in Athens, Greece.
The 1st DEDS School attracted 50+ participants and speakers from 16 countries. The 5-day program comprised an excellent assembly of speakers, both from industry and academia, who talked about the problems, regulations, and challenges related to data technologies' ethical and legal aspects. The seminars covered topics such as GDPR in the sciences, privacy and data protection, ethics in data science, open data science, responsible innovation and quality, fairness and explainability, along with enabling technologies such as security and privacy-preserving techniques, democratizing data access, federated learning, and blockchain technologies, complemented by 15 brilliant student presentations on the data engineering technology they are building to enable the data science of the future.
As we move on to future endeavors, let’s be reminded that the terms Ethical and Legal are not and should not be beyond the care, interests, domain, and expertise of computer and data scientists. These aspects raise significant challenges for Computer Science, but at the same time, Computer Science can offer the right innovative and disciplinary solutions and tools to address the ethical and legal challenges of data technologies.
DEDS is designed to develop education, research, and innovation at the intersection of Data Science and Data Engineering. Its core objective is to provide holistic support for the end-to-end management of the full lifecycle of data, from capture to exploitation by data scientists. DEDS operates under the Horizon 2020 - Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020) framework.
