Prof. S. Koubias received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras, Greece, in 1976 and 1982 respectively. Since 1990 he has been an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Patras and he has been Deputy Chairman in this department for the period 2001-2003. Since November 2015 he is Chairman in the same department. Prof. Koubias has been elected as the Rector of the University of Patras for the period 2006-2010.
 
His main current research interests include real-time embedded (distributed) systems, communication protocols, advanced wired and wireless control/industrial networking systems, distributed wireless sensor networks, routing protocols, management techniques for wireless nodes power consumption,  automation, advanced distributed enterprise systems and industrial communication structures for C2Β, Β2Β applications (use of ontologies, web-services, industrial GRID etc.), advanced interoperable industrial networking architectures, interworking of heterogeneous control communication systems, advanced building networking/management systems, industrial machine vision systems, Dynamic Systems for Industrial / Business Excellence - Total Quality.
 
During the period 2001 to 2003 he was the Director of the Network Operation Center (NOC) of the University of Patras which supports about 25.000 users. He has participated as coordinator or partner in many important Greek and European R&D and educational programs. He has published over 200 papers in prestigious international journals and conference proceedings and his work is acknowledged by the scientific community. He has also written books and course notes in industrial networks and microprocessor/microcomputer systems. He was  a member of the Greek National Council of Education, of IEEE, member of the National Committee for Quality (2003-2005) in the Ministry of Development,  member and coordinator of the Regional Consulting Committee  for Research, Education and Innovation in the Region of Western Greece (2011-2014) and Member-at-Large for the Administrative Committee of the ΙΕΕΕ Industrial Electronics Society(2008-2010).
