Prof. Phoebe Koundouri spoke at the launch of The World Bank’s report, Reboot Development: The Economics of a Livable Planet, hosted by the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford, on September 2nd.

The event was introduced by Professor Sir Charles Godfray, Director of the Oxford Martin School, and moderated by Professor Jim Hall. Prof. Koundouri joined a distinguished panel alongside:

  • Professor Johan Rockström – Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research & Professor in Earth System Science, University of Potsdam

  • Professor Robin Burgess – Professor of Economics, Co-Founder & Director of the International Growth Centre, London School of Economics

  • Professor Amy Dickman – Professor of Wildlife Conservation, University of Oxford & Director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit

  • Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri – Professor, Athens University of Economics & Business; Visiting Professor, University of Cambridge

In her presentation, Prof. Koundouri emphasized the alignment of her work with the report’s message. She highlighted that the traditional view of economic prosperity and environmental protection as competing goals is largely inaccurate.

Scientific evidence supports a new perspective: the wealth of nature is a fundamental source of prosperity. Protecting ecosystems is not only an environmental imperative but also essential for enhancing the resilience and productivity of economies. Countries that leverage their environmental strengths and develop industries within ecological limits will be better positioned to prosper in the future.

The report underscores that degraded natural wealth presents both environmental and economic challenges. Sustainable economic growth, job creation, and broad societal benefits can be achieved by integrating policies across land, air, and water sectors.

Prof. Koundouri expressed her gratitude to the Oxford Martin School, The World Bank, and her fellow panelists for engaging in this important conversation and considered it a privilege to contribute to this collective endeavor.
