OpenAIRE in Greece

Athena Research and Innovation Center (Athena RC) acts as the National Open Access Desk (NOAD) for Greece, a position evolving stakeholders’ engagement and support in research activities, currently run jointly with the  Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (HEAL-Link) as the third partner to the OpenAIRE Advance project.

Greek OpenAIRE NOAD’s ambition is to assist in the establishment of an “Open” national network that evolves every Greek stakeholder in discussions around Open Science. In doing so, the first set of landscaping activities and surveys are expected (and have already started) to take place so as to get a better understanding of the Greek research ecosystem, identify and realise the challenges behind technical, ethical and cultural aspects in choosing Open Access reflecting perceptions of diverse national stakeholders. Some of the aforementioned activities will be performed with and for the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT) in the context of the working group on Open Science that it has established.

The areas that the Greek NOAD will work are:
  • Policies: to align institutional and national policies with EU requirements there has to be clear guidance for the expectations and directions need to be met, complemented by concrete implementation steps in doing so. The Greek NOAD will assist Research Performing Organisations (RPOs), funders and policymakers in adopting Open Access and Open Science policies through OpenAIRE policy templates and checklists that have been formulated for that reason. It will also assist researchers and research administrators in complying with the Horizon2020 requirements.
  • Infrastructures: for repositories to achieve compliance with the OpenAIRE metadata schema, a number of factors should be taken into account. Greek OpenAIRE NOAD will facilitate those processes for literature and data repositories to become compliant with Article 29.2 of the H2020 grant agreement and enhance their visibility both nationally and in the EU. It will also assist repositories’ metadata enrichment activities through SCHOLIX and guide proper repository management and monitoring of data usage via the Repository dashboard service.
  • Training and awareness: the Greek OpenAIRE NOAD will spread awareness to the Greek academic and research community through a number of activities: webinars in Greek language to inform about trends in OA to publications, research data, to update on EU requirements and the EOSC, etc. workshops targeting all stakeholders to discuss and work together on pre-defined issues training events in issues around Open Science (e.g. data management plans) and in using specific OpenAIRE services and tools (e.g. Amnesia)
