Significant achievements of the ISI at the Innovation Radar competition

21-11-2023

Industrial Systems Institute among the leading Innovation Research Organizations

It is a significant achievement for the Industrial Systems Institute of Athena Research Center, which has been evaluated and selected to take part in the final stage of the Innovation Radar 2022 competition. In this particular competition, the European Commission evaluates the achievements of funded projects and selects those technological applications that are considered innovative, have prospects and can contribute to the development of new usable products in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

The final stage of the competition includes three (3) innovative applications that were designed, developed and implemented by the Industrial Systems Institute (ISI) of Athena R.C. in the context of the European project "CPSoSAware - Cross-layer model-based distributed framework for multi-objective design of Reconfigurable systems for connected and mobile CPSs", which was successfully completed in December 2022.

The Industrial Systems Institute (ISI) of Athena R.C. was the coordinating partner of the CPSoSAware project, having Dr. Aris Lalos, Research Director and Dr. Apostolos Fournaris, Principal Researcher, as Scientific Directors (SD), who coordinated and guided a consortium that contributed to the implementation of the project and the development of innovative applications; the Greek partners included the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Technology of the University of Patras (www.ece.upatras.gr), the company Panasonic Automotive Systems (eu.automotive.panasonic.com) and the company ATOS. The whole consortium involved 12 additional partners [three (3) European industries, three (3) SMEs, two (2) research institutes and innovation centers and four (4) Universities] from a total of 9 European countries.

The selected three (3) innovative applications have to do with technological solutions based on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity/Systems Security which were successfully tested in autonomous driving simulators, Panasonic Automotive Europe's automated vehicle (PASSEU) and factory digital twins, in Fiat (CRF)’s research center:

  1. A suite of innovative solutions, collaboratively distributed with low-computational intelligence and optimization for scene analysis and simultaneous mapping, position estimation of robotic systems and cybersecurity/privacy incident management: https://innovation-radar.ec.europa.eu /innovation/51147 (developed by the ISI research team under the guidance of Aris Lalos, Research Director)
  2. Models and visual interfaces of increased immersion supporting interactive visualization, interactive learning and real-time collaborative control of machines operating in industrial environments: https://innovation-radar.ec.europa.eu/innovation/51150 (developed by the ISI research team under the guidance of Aris Lalos, Research Director)
  3. Tools that monitor the level of cyber security of interconnected cyber-physical systems in real time using autonomous security units embedded in the hardware to be resistant to attacks by quantum computers: https://innovation-radar.ec.europa.eu /innovation/51141 (developed by the INVIS research team under the guidance of Dr. Apostolos Fournaris, Principal Researcher)

The Industrial Systems Institute held a catalytic role in the project since it coordinated all partners and was responsible for:

  2. designing and implementing intelligent and secure solutions for the analysis of the work environment, simultaneous mapping, tracking and positioning and management of cyber-security and privacy incidents on heterogeneous platforms,
  3. controlling the operation of the advanced applications implemented by ISI and integrated into the comprehensive autonomous driving simulator
  4. developing innovative technological applications for Panasonic's autonomous vehicle and the digital twin of the industrial environment at FIAT's research center in Italy.
