TO VIMA: Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to the Greek Language?

The President of Athena Research Center, Professor Ioannis Emiris, and the Director of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP), Dr. Vassilis Katsouros, spoke to TO VIMA and journalist Dimitris Elafropoulos about the challenges and prospects of the Greek language in the era of Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the role of research and national infrastructures in securing its digital presence.
 
As Professor Emiris notes, “The development of domestic AI language tools and models for the Greek language is directly linked to the digital survival of Greek, the country’s digital sovereignty, and the preservation of its cultural identity”, emphasizing the importance of infrastructures such as Greece’s AI Factory PHAROS and the DAEDALUS supercomputer for the utilization of Greek language data and the development of advanced AI language applications.
 
Dr. Katsouros, in turn, underlines that “AI can function as a tool for the digital preservation of linguistic diversity”, while Greek language models such as Meltemi and Krikri aim to more accurately capture the semantic and cultural nuances of the language, ensuring genuine linguistic and cultural fidelity.
