On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the students of the 11th grade (B’ Lyceum) of Ionios School had the opportunity to attend a lecture by the President of the Athena Research Center and Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Mr. Ioannis Emiris, entitled “Artificial Intelligence: Promises and Challenges.”
The aim of the talk was to stimulate reflection on a technology that is developing at an extremely rapid pace and is already affecting many aspects of our everyday lives.
Mr. Emiris referred to the significant potential of Artificial Intelligence, ranging from scientific research and healthcare to education, language, and culture, emphasizing that it is a powerful tool capable of enhancing human capabilities. At the same time, he highlighted the challenges that accompany it, pointing out that AI, no matter how impressive it may be, is not neutral: it requires responsibility and human judgment. He also stressed that Artificial Intelligence has already changed the way the younger generation learns, as well as the way it creates and expresses itself, noting that students today, and even more so in the future, will write less thanks to the use of AI systems.
The lecture evolved into an open discussion with the students, who were invited to think about who designs technology, for what purpose, and based on which principles, in order to understand that AI does not concern only specialists, but all of us, especially the younger generation, which will experience more intensely both its consequences and its vast developments and possibilities.
