The ARCHER project aims to organize a five-year technological challenge to evaluate and advance research on Human Language Technologies (HLT) for defense applications. It includes data collection and annotation, experimental evaluation campaigns, and fosters collaborations at a European level, supporting defense and strategic needs.
The Institute for Language and Speech Processing of Athena RC is responsible for collecting, annotating, and managing linguistic datasets required for the evaluation campaigns, as well as for developing tools and methodologies for the effective evaluation of HLT systems.
The ALT-EDIC4EU project aims to facilitate the development of robust, scalable infrastructure and operations for ALT-EDIC, in order to support the federation of the Language Technology (LT) ecosystem. Building on the expertise of nine core partners in LT infrastructures, data spaces, and Large Language Models (LLMs), the project focuses on creating a European center for LT evaluation, dynamically mapping the European LTs and LLMs landscape, and organizing training sessions, workshops, and events.
ALT-EDIC4EU addresses the need to strengthen Europe’s ecosystem around AI and LLMs, ensuring greater autonomy in data use and sharing, while preserving linguistic diversity and reducing dependence on non-European technologies.
The project will be running for 48 months with funding from the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL-2024-AI-06 call).
ILSP will contribute to all project activities with a focus on the infrastructure deployment and mapping of the LT landscape.
The LLMs4EU project is dedicated to preserving and promoting Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity in the digital age, through cooperation between economic and academic actors in the field of generative AI.

The project is led by ALT-EDIC (Alliance for Language Technologies – European Digital Infrastructure Consortium) and carried out by a broad consortium of leading research centers and companies specializing in language data management, LLMs and language technologies. The project consortium comprises 20 partners, led by INCEPTION SRL, and eight associate and affiliated partners, Athena RC being one of them.
Cultural heritage sites face constant threats from pollution, climate change, and the wear and tear of time. Preserving these treasures is a major challenge, as traditional methods can be costly and sometimes ineffective. There is also the risk of irreversible damage during restoration. New solutions are needed to protect these sites for future generations. In this context, the EU-funded ARTEMIS project steps in with a high-tech approach, using digital twins and augmented reality/virtual reality technology to conserve cultural heritage. By creating detailed 3D models, ARTEMIS can simulate real-world conditions and test preservation methods virtually. This allows experts to predict how different strategies will impact the sites, helping to protect these valuable assets more safely and efficiently.

Data is an asset that spurs innovation, drives decision making, improves operations and impacts science, environment, health, energy, education, industry, and society in general. Nevertheless, the expanding sea of data remains mostly unexplored and underutilized. The EU-funded DataGEMS project aims to change that by offering a next-generation dataset discovery and management ecosystem that will provide algorithms to make datasets discoverable, combinable and explorable. DataGEMS develops state-of-the-art data management, natural language processing and machine learning technology to discover and analyze datasets of different data modalities such as tabular data, text documents, knowledge graphs, and images. The main goal is to gain new insights into vast amounts of complex, heterogeneous data sets by providing intuitive tools. DataGEMS promotes data FAIRness in key areas such as education, meteorology and linguistics.

ATRIUM will exploit and strengthen complementarities between leading Εuropean infrastructures: DARIAH, ARIADNE, CLARIN and OPERAS in order to provide vastly improved access to a rich portfolio of state-of-the-art services available to researchers across countries, languages, domains and media, building on a shared understanding and interoperability principles established in the SSHOC cluster project and other previous collaborations. Research infrastructures in the Arts and Humanities domain must cater to a very wide range of stakeholders and offer services that cut across discipline-specific boundaries.
ATRIUM will tackle this heterogeneity within the Arts and Humanities by going deep and wide at the same time: on the one hand, ATRIUM will make a groundbreaking contribution to the consolidation and expansion of services, including data services, specifically in the field of archaeology, while, on the other hand, facilitating access to a wide array of essential text, image and sound-based services that benefit a number of other disciplines within the Arts and Humanities, and cover all phases of the research data lifecycle (creating, processing, analyzing, preserving, providing access to and reusing).

Additionally, Athena undertakes a significant activity which aims to facilitate access to research facilities in the Art and Humanities with a complimentary offer of advanced technologies and local expertise; to enhance researcher mobility and cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer of best practices throughout Europe; and to provide specific transnational training and access linked to the new types of Arts and Humanities data showcased in the project.

PILLAR-Robots aims at developing a new generation of robots endowed with a higher level of autonomy, that are able to determine their own goals and establish their own strategies, creatively building on the experience acquired during their lifetime to fulfil the desires of their human designers/users in real-life application use-cases brought to TRL5. To this end, the project will operationalize the concept of Purpose, drawn from the cognitive sciences, to increase the autonomy and domain independence of robots during autonomous learning and, at the same time, to lead them to acquire knowledge and skills that are actually relevant for operating in target real applications. In particular, the project will develop algorithms for the acquisition of purpose by the robot, ways to bias the perceptual, motivational and decision systems of the robots’ cognitive architectures towards purposes, and strategies for learning representations, skills and models that allow the execution of purpose-related deliberative and reactive decision processes. Given the aim of reaching TRL5, PILLAR-Robots will implement and validate demonstrators of purposeful lifelong open-ended autonomy using the resulting Purposeful Intrinsically Motivated Cognitive Architecture within three different application fields characterized by different types and levels of variability: Agri-food, Edutainment, and unstructured Industrial/retail. PILLAR-Robots will perform a complete evaluation of the possibilities and impacts of purposeful lifelong open-ended autonomy in these realms from an operational perspective, but also from a market-oriented (with significant productivity gains) and societal (socio-economic, ethical and regulatory) perspective. Engagement of industry and SME players is also expected in order to prepare the ground for further large-scale demonstration.
