The Olympia Research Summit took place for the first time in Athens on May 29–30, 2025, bringing together leading Greek researchers from both Greece and abroad in the fields of Big Data, Systems, and Artificial Intelligence. The summit aimed to foster collaboration, highlight future research challenges, and strengthen Greece’s role in the global scientific landscape.
Over the course of two days, more than 20 distinguished speakers and 80 researchers from top universities and research centers presented their work, exchanged knowledge, and explored collaborative opportunities. The event opened with a welcome panel featuring Minos Garofalakis (Athena Research Center & Technical University of Crete), Shaowei Liu (Huawei European Research Institute), Prof. Ioannis Emiris (Athena Research Center & University of Athens), and Prof. Yannis Ioannidis (University of Athens & Athena Research Center).
The program featured focused sessions on:
-
Database Systems and Storage Innovations, with talks by Prof. Anastasia Ailamaki (EPFL), Manos Athanassoulis (Boston University), and Nikos Mamoulis (University of Ioannina & Athena Research Center).
-
Data Privacy, Security & Quality, highlighting topics such as verifiable inference in AI (Charalampos Papamanthou, Yale), confidential computing (Ioannis Demertzis, UC Santa Cruz), and sustainable technologies (Yannis Velegrakis, Utrecht University & Archimedes Unit, Athena Research Center).
-
Founder Stories in Data & AI, featuring Konstantinos Venetsanopoulos (Arrikto, HP) and Christoforos Kachris (InAccel).
A highlight of the summit was the keynote address by Peter Triantafillou (University of Warwick) titled “Machine Unlearning: An Emerging Fundamental Component of ML Pipelines”, spotlighting one of the most pressing challenges in the evolution of machine learning.
The Olympia Research Summit was organized by the Athena Research Center and sponsored by Huawei.
This inaugural edition strengthened ties between researchers, entrepreneurs, and academia, laying the groundwork for future projects, innovation clusters, and strategic collaborations.
