Memorandum of Understanding with the German Archaeological Institute of Athens

The Athena Research Center and the German Archaeological Institute of Athens (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut – DAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing science and technological progress in the fields of archaeology and archaeological sciences. The Memorandum was signed at the Library of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, by the Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Athena, Professor Yannis Emiris, and the Director of DAI Athens, Katja Sporn, in the presence of the Director of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing, Vassilis Katsouros.
 
This collaboration aims to optimize the expertise of both organizations through the development and implementation of joint research projects, as well as to promote digital technology across all aspects of archaeological practice. The two institutions seek to highlight cultural heritage and contribute to scientific knowledge through the application of innovative technologies.
Key Areas of Cooperation:
  • Implementation of cutting-edge technologies for the digitization, documentation, and presentation of archaeological data, following FAIR and OPEN principles.
  • Support for young scientists in the fields of computational and digital archaeology.
  • Strengthening outreach activities to present archaeological research findings to the broader public.
  • Intensifying collaboration through joint publications and co-organized events to promote archaeological knowledge.
Following the signing of the agreement, the Director of ILSP/Athena, Vassilis Katsouros, stated:
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Despina Tsiafaki and Vassilis Evangelidis, whose initiative was instrumental in launching this collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute of Athens. The cooperation between the Athena Research Center and DAI creates new prospects for research and the application of digital technology in archaeology, enhancing the documentation and promotion of our cultural heritage through innovative approaches."
 
The Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Athena Professor Ioannis Emiris added:
