IBISBA-GR at SuSChemE-SUSTENS2 conference

Athena Research Center participated in the SuSChemE-SUSTENS2 International Conference, held 28-30 June 2026 at the Royal Olympic Hotel in Athens, representing IBISBA, the pan-European research infrastructure for industrial biotechnology and biomanufacturing. As a member of IBISBA-GR, the Greek national node of IBISBA, Athena RC played a central role in the node's presence at this flagship event, which brought together researchers, academics, and industry professionals working on sustainable chemical engineering and biotechnology.
Throughout the three days of the conference, IBISBA maintained a dedicated exhibition stand, offering an opportunity to present IBISBA's services and capabilities to the wider community and to forge new collaborations within the biotechnology and chemical engineering sectors.
Athena RC and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) co-organised the workshop "Data Fabric of Twinning Services for Industrial Biotechnology", under the umbrella of IBISBA-GR. The workshop presented an integrated computational environment designed to bridge bioprocess data infrastructures with containerised modelling workflows, demonstrating how FAIR-aligned data management, metadata harmonisation, and workflow orchestration technologies can be combined into a unified digital ecosystem for industrial biotechnology applications.
As partners in BioIndustry 4.0, the Horizon Europe project advancing the digital transformation of industrial biotechnology, Athena RC and NTUA also co-organised an interactive stakeholder workshop. The session covered four critical topics: AI-assisted process control for industrial bioreactors, kinetic modelling for strain optimisation, automated workflow orchestration, and modelling and quantification of spectroscopic data, highlighting the project's progress towards data-driven innovation in the sector.
Athena RC's contributions to the conference also included a scientific poster presenting Raw2Ready, a platform for harmonisation, semantic annotation, and AI-assisted exploration of fermentation data. The poster was presented by George Georgakilas, Scientific Associate at the Information Management Systems Institute (IMSI), who also facilitated the Data Fabric workshop, with the support of the NTUA team.
