The Athena Research Center welcomes a new member to its research community. George Paraskevopoulos was recently elected and has assumed his duties as Associate Researcher at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP) of Athena Research Center.
George Paraskevopoulos holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and, in 2024, received his PhD in the field of Machine Learning for speech and natural language processing. He has gained both research and professional experience in industry and international research environments and has been collaborating with Athena Research Center since 2020.
At the Institute for Language and Speech Processing, he contributes to the development of artificial intelligence technologies, particularly Greek Large Language Models, aiming to strengthen digital infrastructures and language technologies for the Greek language.
Commenting on his appointment, he stated:
“In an era where Artificial Intelligence is transforming our everyday lives, it is an honour to assume the role of Researcher at ILSP/Athena. My central goal is to develop multimodal systems that perceive the world holistically, while at the same time supporting ILSP’s long-standing mission to promote the Greek language. Through this direction, I aim to contribute to outward-looking fundamental research with strong international impact, acting as a catalyst for technological innovation with real societal value”.
On the occasion of Mr Paraskevopoulos’s appointment, the Director of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of Athena Research Center, Dr Vassilis Katsouros, noted:
“Mr Paraskevopoulos’s election as Associate Researcher at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing marks the natural continuation of his substantial and productive presence at the Institute as a collaborating researcher. His scientific excellence and ability to bridge fundamental research with innovative applications significantly strengthen the Institute’s strategic direction. Furthermore, his contribution to the development of Greek large multimodal language models and his commitment to enhancing digital language infrastructures play a decisive role in promoting Greek research in Artificial Intelligence internationally. We are particularly pleased to now formally welcome him to the Institute and are confident that his contribution will continue to be instrumental to the development of ILSP and Athena Research Center as a whole”.
The President of the Board of Directors and Director General of Athena Research Center, Professor Ioannis Emiris, stated:
“I am delighted that Athena’s research staff is being strengthened by an outstanding researcher who has already made significant contributions to the Center’s activities and is expected to lead new scientific directions in the near future. Giorgos is also a highly valued colleague, and we are all pleased to now officially welcome him to Athena”.
