Dr. Jorge Sanchez, Director of the ESA BIC Greece incubator of the European Space Agency—hosted by Corallia of the Athena Research Center—gave an in-depth interview to Kathimerini tis Kyriakis and journalist Tasoula Karaiskaki, published on May 4, 2025. In the interview, he discusses Greece’s progress in the field of space innovation as well as his personal journey from Colombia to Greece.

 

Emphasizing the creation of a strong innovation ecosystem, he refers to the founding of si-Cluster, the dozens of startups being incubated at Corallia, and the space missions in which Greece is now actively involved. He highlights the unmatched benefits of leveraging Greek ingenuity and the need for investments based on real market needs. At the same time, he talks about the challenges of innovation in the country and the importance of collaboration at the European level.

 

“In Greece, there is strong research activity, exceptional talent, a high level of fundamental knowledge, and flexible minds. But what we lack are good examples and their promotion. We suffer from a kind of short-sightedness of purpose,” says Dr. Sanchez, underscoring the need for applied and purpose-driven innovation.
