The intersection of the humanities and digital technologies is the focus of the
June 2026 issue (No. 63) of AUEB News, the newspaper of the
Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Entitled
“Culture in the Age of Algorithms: How Digital Technologies Are Transforming the Humanities,” the issue’s main feature explores the evolving relationship between humanities research and digital technologies.
Through a series of articles and interviews, with significant contributions from Athena RC researchers and associates, the feature examines how contemporary digital technologies are reshaping research in the humanities and the study of cultural heritage. It highlights the new opportunities these technologies create for the research, documentation, preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage, while also addressing the challenges associated with their use.
The feature is edited by Panos Constantopoulos, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Informatics at AUEB and Affiliated Faculty Member at Athena Research Center. In his introductory article, “The Humanities Meet Digital Technologies,” he traces the evolution of Digital Humanities as a dynamic field of interdisciplinary collaboration, where computational methods complement traditional research approaches, opening up new avenues for the study and use of cultural heritage.
Athena’s presence throughout the feature reflects the breadth of the Center’s research at the intersection of computer science, digital humanities and culture: from the use of Digital Twins for the protection of monuments and historic cities and the role of European research infrastructures, to immersive technologies for “difficult heritage,” AI applications for the analysis and interpretation of cultural data, the digitisation of historic textiles, and the transition from digital cultural objects to interconnected knowledge.
