Athena Research Center Meets Innovation at the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair

September 7-15, 2024 - Hall 7, Stand 7

04-09-2024

From September 7 to 15, 2024, the Athena Research Center will participate in the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), with all activities taking place in the unified pavilion of the Ministry of Development and the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) at Hall 7. Meanwhile, researchers and administrative staff from Athena will be present at Stand 7, showcasing recent research and technological projects. This year's TIF focuses on the modern challenges faced by the country, emphasizing the importance of new technologies, innovation, and sustainable development.

The President of the Athena Research Center, Professor Ioannis Emiris, will highlight the contribution of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence to critical developmental sectors. At the same time, there will be a rich program featuring presentations and discussions on cybersecurity and the development of the open Large Language Model for Greek, "Meltemi". Additionally, Professor Petros Maragos, Director of the Institute of Robotics, will participate in the GSRI event titled “Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship: Greece in the Coming World” presenting developments in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

Exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to explore the innovative exhibits of the Research Center Athena and learn about the latest developments in digital technology.

Speaker: Dr. Ilias Politis, Principal Researcher, Institute of Industrial Systems
Sunday, September 15, 2024, 12:00-13:00
  • Meltemi: The Open Large Language Model for Greek
Speaker: Nasos Katsamanis, Principal Researcher, Deputy Director, Institute for Language and Speech Processing
At the stand of the Athena Research Center, visitors will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of exhibits and digital tools, including, among others:
  • AI4EDU: Innovation in school education using Artificial Intelligence technologies to support new, flexible, personalized, engaging, and effective teaching and learning approaches amidst the increasing challenges posed by the digital transformation of education.
  • ARCADIA: The program focuses on systems with dynamic resource requirements and environments with high energy consumption, such as edge data centers, which are critical for next-generation networks.
  • ΕΠΙSTEAΜΟΥΣΙΚΗ (EPISTEAMOUSIKI): An online platform for secondary education students and teachers where music meets science and technology, with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics).
  • MyEleusis: An immersive experience of ancient Eleusis and its mysteries, offering a comprehensive experiential journey with the aid of a diverse set of modern digital systems.
  • PREMIERE: The platform aims to modernize performing arts, focusing on dance and theater, using advanced digital technologies to support the entire lifecycle of performances, from production and curation by both amateurs and professionals to delivery, audience understanding, and analysis by art scholars.
  • PSLifestyle: A pan-European initiative for citizen-led actions on sustainability.
  • Automated Robotic Systems: Promotion of robotics with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and development of strategic partnerships in Greece, including security, field, and healthcare applications.
  • Cybersecurity Applications: Integration of subsystems for simulating and managing cyber-physical systems in smart, energy-efficient buildings.
  • Collaborative Decision-Making & Learning for Connected and Automated Vehicles: This involves tools and approaches that enhance vehicle cooperation for better situational awareness. Collaboration occurs either through the fusion of data collected by vehicle sensors or by transmitting data to the cloud and merging deep learning models trained privately by each vehicle. The exhibit will showcase three innovative solutions that have been developed and tested.
  • Digital Twin: The virtual representation of real-world entities (devices or machines) and processes, synchronized with them with a defined level of fidelity.
  • Private 5G and Cognitive Compute Continuum Technologies in a VR Gaming Use-Case: A real-time demo where users, equipped with 360 VR headsets, will play games (e.g., Minecraft) connected to a 5G network using machine learning techniques. This approach aims to engage the audience by simultaneously showing the user's view and demonstrating the capabilities of the 5G network with machine learning techniques.
