Leonidas Efthymios (Akis) Panagiotou holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Patras (2011) and an MSc in Statistics and Decision Making from the Departments of Computer Engineering and Informatics and Mathematics, University of Patras (2014). His academic background combines strong foundations in mathematics, statistics, and computational methods with applied programming and data analysis.
He is currently working as a Data & AI Research Associate at the ATHENA Research Center, where he is involved in data-intensive research and engineering tasks, including large-scale data acquisition, processing, and transformation. His work focuses on developing and maintaining data pipelines for heterogeneous and unstructured data sources, supporting research activities in data science and artificial intelligence.
His expertise includes Python-based data engineering, statistical data analysis, machine learning model application, and natural language processing. He has extensive experience in data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, dimensionality reduction, and anomaly detection, as well as in web data extraction, API integration, and the construction of automated data collection workflows.
In addition, he has worked on large-scale information extraction and structuring tasks, as well as multilingual and cross-domain datasets derived from diverse sources such as web platforms, institutional repositories, and audiovisual metadata. His work includes the design of pipelines for metadata extraction, structured dataset creation, and transformation of complex raw data into research-ready formats.
