He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the
National Technical University of Athens in 1982, his MSc in Applied Mathematics from
Harvard University in 1983, and his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the
University of California-Berkeley in 1986. Immediately after that he joined the faculty of the
Computer Sciences Department of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he became a Professor before finally leaving in 1999. His research interests include Database and Information Systems, Data Science, Data and Text Analytics, Scalable Data Processing, Data Infrastructures and Digital Repositories, Recommender Systems and Personalization, and Digital Storytelling, topics on which he has
published over 170 articles in leading journals and conferences. He also holds four patents.
Yannis is an
ACM and
IEEE Fellow (2004 and 2010, respectively) and a member of
Academia Europaea. He is also a recipient of the
VLDB "10-Year Best Paper Award" (2003), the "Presidential Young Investigator Award" - PYI (1991), and of several awards for teaching excellence, including the nation-wide
"Xanthopoulos-Pneumatikos Award for Outstanding Academic Teaching" in Greece (2006) and the "Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching" at the University of Wisconsin (1996). He has also been a keynote speaker at several conferences and an invited speaker in several distinguished lecturer series at prominent universities and research centers.
Yannis has been the coordinator and legal entity head of
OpenAIRE, the software director of the European
Human Brain Project flagship initiative, the coordinator of the
EOSC Future strategic project, and a (co-)principal investigator of over 100 research projects funded by various government agencies (USA, Europe, Greece) or private industry. He has been an Associate Editor of
Communications of the ACM,
Information Systems,
Journal of Digital Libraries ,
VLDB Journal, and a member of the program committees of over seventy conferences, six times as (co-)chair (ICDE'09, ADBIS'07, EDBT'06, HDMS'03, VLDB'02, VDB'98, and SSDBM'97).
Yannis has served as the ACM Secretary/Treasurer (July 2018-June 2020), the
ACM SIGMOD Chair (July 2009-June 2013), following a 4-year term as Vice-Chair, and in several other ACM boards and committees. He is or has been a member of several other executive bodies of professional organizations (
VLDB Endowment,
IEEE ICDE Steering Committee,
EDBT Endowment) and Scientific Advisory or Evaluation Boards (
CWI,
Max Planck Institute for Informatics,
Greek National Science & Technology Council, Greek Ministry of Health). He has served as the Greek delegate to the
European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) (2012-2023), being a member of its Executive Board (2016-2022) and a vice-chair (2019-2021), currently being a permanent expert. He is also the Greek delegate in the
European Open Science Cloud Steering Board, the ESFRI representative to the
e-Infrastructures Reflection Group (e-IRG), an expert in the Programme Committee on
Research Infrastructures within the European Commission's Horizon2020 Framework Programme, as well as the co-chair of the Global Climate Hub of the
UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN).
