Dr. George Alexis Ioannakis received his Diploma (B.Eng, M.Eng) in Rural and Surveying Engineering of the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 2011. In 2018, he received his PhD degree from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh) in the research domain of 3D mesh processing and information retrieval. During his undergraduate studies he attended an academic semester at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics within the ERASMUS exchange program. Since 2013, he has joined the Institute for language and Speech processing (ILSP) of the Athena Research Center (ARC) as a member of the Multimedia Research Group. As of 2020, Dr. Ioannakis is an assistant researcher at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of ARC. He visited and worked as a short-term researcher at the College of Information and Computer Sciences of the University of Massachusetts, USA. He is involved in both writing and implementation of research projects at ARC and DUTh. He has been a teaching assistant at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of DUTh for the courses: i) Pattern Recognition, ii) Digital Signal Processing, and iii) Circuits, Signals and Systems. As part of his current activities he is a co-lecturer of the postgraduate course “Machine Learning” in the M.Sc. in Language Technology, that is served in collaboration from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens and ILSP/ARC. Simultaneously, he continues to assist in the teaching process of the course “Pattern Recognition” at ECE, DUTH. His research interests include processing, content-based retrieval and classification of three-dimensional (3D) polygonal meshes, photogrammetry, digital image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and the construction and programming of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Systems) mainly for cultural heritage domain applications. He serves as a reviewer for international scientific journals and as an evaluator for national R&D projects. He is a member of the Hellenic Technical Chamber and of the IEEE.
