George Papastefanatos

Researchers

Dr. George Papastefanatos is Research Director (Grade A) at the Information Management Systems Institute (IMSI) of the Athena Research Center. 
His research focuses on Data Management and Data Engineering, developing scalable methods for managing the entire data lifecycle, from data integration and metadata management to knowledge graphs, semantic interoperability, data quality, and efficient data processing. 
His recent work advances cloud-native data infrastructures and human-centered data systems, leveraging artificial intelligence and visual analytics to support interactive data exploration, explainable analytics, and collaborative decision making. 
He has participated in and coordinated more than 20 European and national R&D projects and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications. 
His work has received four Best Paper Awards at international conferences, and in 2018 he was awarded an HFRI/ELIDEK Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the area of Mathematics and Computer Science. 
He has served as an adjunct and visiting lecturer at several Greek universities, is a member of IEEE and ACM, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Athena Research Center since 2026.
