Yannis Ioannidis Opens Access to Knowledge for the Whole World

03-10-2025

Prof. Yannis Ioannidis, former President of the Athena Research Center and current President of the ACM, the world’s largest association of computing professionals, announced that, as of January 1, 2026, the ACM Digital Library will be open and freely accessible to all, worldwide.

Speaking to the Athens News Agency, Macedonian Press Agency (ANA-MPA), he explained the importance of Open Science for society: “Science is something sacred. Its authentic results are sacred and constitute a societal asset. Science is not a business and cannot become one. Let us not forget that research is primarily funded by society by the taxpayer’s money.”

This historic decision was announced from the stage of the 12th Heidelberg Laureate Forum, reaffirming ACM’s commitment to promoting knowledge as a public good.
