Webinar: Words Can Break Bones: Necessities and Clarifications

27-05-2024

The seminar was co-organized by the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee (EIFKD) of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA) and Working Group 7 "Work-Life Balance – Inclusive Environment" of the EIFKD Network of Research Centers and Independent Research Institutes.

The purpose of the seminar was to highlight issues related to the inclusion and visibility of all social groups in both spoken and written language, aiming to prevent various forms of marginalization and create a world that embraces all genders.

The seminar was led by linguist Dr. Angeliki Fotopoulou, Director of Research at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of the Athena Research Center. In her presentation, she initially focused on clarifying terms such as gendered language and inclusion, as well as concepts related to these terms, such as gender and identity, language and identity, and linguistic sexism. She emphasized the connection between language and social identity, primarily addressing the linguistic aspect of the issue, i.e., the reflection of roles and identities in our linguistic reality, providing multiple examples and discussing various proposals to address different types of exclusion.

The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Anastasia Tsangarakou, Director of Research at ELGO-DIMITRA and head of the EIFKD of Hellenic Agricultural Organization DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA), and Dr. Alexandra Sintori, Associate Researcher at ELGO-DIMITRA, member of the EIFKD of ELGO-DIMITRA, and coordinator of Working Group 7 "Work-Life Balance – Inclusive Environment" of the EIFKD Network of Research Centers and Independent Research Institutes.
