Visit of Dr. Tasos Gaitanis, General Secretary for Research and Innovation, to the Athena Research Center

13-09-2024

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Dr. Tasos Gaitanis, the new General Secretary for Research and Innovation, visited the Athena Research Center as part of his new duties. He was welcomed by Professor Ioannis Emiris, President of Athena, who briefed him on the latest developments and initiatives of the Center. Dr. Gaitanis was then given a tour of the Athena facilities and offices, where he had the opportunity to speak with researchers and administrative staff. The discussion focused on the Center’s work, ongoing research projects, and the daily challenges faced by the team. The main topics included further development and support for research activities.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Archimedes facilities, one of the seven Units at Athena, which emphasizes research in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Algorithms, as well as supporting new researchers and PhD candidates in these fields. Dr. Gaitanis interacted with the new researchers supported by the Unit and, in the welcoming auditorium of Archimedes, had the chance to engage in discussions with the Unit heads and some of Athena’s spin-offs.

After the visit, Dr. Tasos Gaitanis emphasized: “As a state, we invest in research and innovation and have managed to create an ecosystem that is becoming increasingly robust. We stand by our scientists, listen to them, and actively support their work. Furthermore, we are continuously creating conditions for young scientists to remain and excel in our country. Our goal is to strengthen the transfer of technology to innovation and to enhance both the scientific community and the economy for the benefit of our entire society”.

On his part, Prof. Ioannis Emiris highlighted that Athena, through its specialization in Information, Knowledge, and Communication Technologies, consistently serves the Research - Innovation - Education triangle, with a nationwide presence and international reach. Athena supports both Basic and Applied Research and Innovation, marking significant progress in all quantitative indicators through collaborations and synergies both domestically and internationally, ultimately leading to the commercial exploitation of research results.
