Scratch Programming Sprint Organized by Athena Research Center at Doukas School

02-02-2026

The Women Innovation Unit of the Athena Research Center, in collaboration with Officina Futuro Fondazione, organized a three-hour Scratch programming sprint at Doukas School in Athens on Friday, 12 December 2025. The activity brought together 20 students aged 16 - 18 in an interactive, team-based programming experience inspired by the Girls Code It Better (GCIB) educational model.

The sprint aimed to develop participants’ programming skills, creative problem-solving abilities, and teamwork. Following a brief introduction to the Athena Research Center, students were introduced to the Scratch platform and its basic programming structures and tools.

Participants worked in teams to design a simple game in which a player collects seashells while avoiding crabs. Teams developed visual elements and movement mechanics before integrating obstacles and scoring functions. Although certain aspects of the implementation proved more challenging, all teams successfully completed the tasks within the allocated time.

Several students expressed interest in further improving their games after the event and planned to submit enhanced versions to their teacher.

Overall, the sprint proved highly successful, offering participants a hands-on and engaging learning experience that combined technical skill development with teamwork and creativity.
