Greek Language Models: Meltemi and Kri-Kri bring Artificial Intelligence to the Greek language

14-04-2025

The Director of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing at the Athena Research Center, Mr. Vassilis Katsouros, gave an interview to the Naftemporiki channel and journalist Christina Kousouni regarding the development of the Greek Artificial Intelligence Language Models, Meltemi and Kri-Kri, by the Institute. As he explained, this is an important effort to digitally empower the Greek language, aiming to support and utilize it through modern technological applications.

Kri-Kri, which was presented on the occasion of International Greek Language Day, is the most recent and advanced model. As Mr. Katsouros highlighted, beyond its natural language processing capabilities, Kri-Kri can generate code, supports a larger context window, and performs even better in translations, as it was trained on a large volume of Greek and English data. The model is already available for use by individual users, developers, students, etc., as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, thanks to its relatively “lightweight” size.

Special emphasis was placed on the importance of open data, collaboration with institutions, and the necessity of creating an Artificial Intelligence ecosystem centered on the Greek language. At the same time, Mr. Katsouros also referred to the upcoming launch of “FAROS,” the first Greek artificial intelligence factory, which will serve as a springboard for even more ambitious Language Models.
