Construction phase started for two major Athena facilities

Advancing Infrastructure and Research Capabilities for the Athena Research Center

04-06-2024

The Athena Research Center proudly announces the signing of two major reconstruction programs as part of its comprehensive construction initiative. These projects include the reconstruction of Athena's headquarters in Maroussi and the construction of new building facilities in Patras.

The refurbishment of the Maroussi building aims to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability, aligning with modern energy requirements. The contract, worth €2.72 million, was signed on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in the presence of the Minister of Development Kostas Skrekas and Deputy Minister Maximos Senetakis. Also present at the signing were the General Secretary for Research and Innovation, Professor Athanasios Kyriazis, the Special Advisor from HRADF, Mr. Panagiotis Stamboulidis, and the Project Manager, Mr. Vasilis Kyriakopoulos.

The new building in Patras will be constructed on privately-owned land, addressing the increased housing needs of Athena due to its significant growth in recent years. The project has a total budget of €4.8 million. The contract was signed by the Regional Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, Athena's President Prof. Yiannis Emiris, and the CEO of the Contractor Company Kamariotis ATEE, Stavros Kamariotis.

Recently, funding was approved for the purchase of new facilities in Athens, paving the way for a competitive tender process to select a contractor. Prof. Yiannis Emiris, President of Athena, stated, "this is a major step towards shaping the future of our Center, as it will allow all our teams to be housed together on our premises. Moreover, it will create significant opportunities for new research and innovation activities".

These upgrades are part of a broader €55 million infrastructure enhancement project, supported by the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the European Investment Bank. These initiatives are integral to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0", co-funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU. They represent significant milestones in Athena's journey to enhance its infrastructure, fostering an environment conducive to cutting-edge research and innovation.

Stay tuned for more updates as these projects progress.
