On Sunday, April 19, 2026, the “A Day at the Park – Climate Picnic” event took place at Antonis Tritsis Metropolitan Park, bringing together scientists, citizens, as well as partners and ambassadors of the European Climate Pact. The event aimed to foster public dialogue around the climate crisis and encourage active citizen engagement through practical ideas in an enjoyable experience in nature. 

The event was co-organized by Climate Pact Ambassadors and members of the Sustainable Development Unit of the Athena Research Center, under the direction of Professor Phoebe Koundouri. Athena actively supported the initiative, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental awareness, and the connection between science and society. 

 

During the event, participants of all ages had the opportunity to learn about the importance of evidence-based climate mitigation and adaptation policies, as well as the role of the European Climate Pact as a tool for participatory governance. Discussions focused on how scientific knowledge can be translated into practical solutions and local and regional policies with tangible impact. The citizens took part in climate walks and interactive activities and also had a low-carbon, plastic-free picnic. 

A highlight of the event was the presentation and hands-on experience of Lusi (Land Use Simulator), a serious game developed by members of the Sustainable Development Unit. Through this interactive simulation, participants were invited to make decisions on land use—such as agriculture, afforestation, and urban development—while observing in real time the environmental consequences of their choices. The tool effectively demonstrated the importance of informed decision-making and the complex interactions between economy, environment, and society. 

 

The strong turnout confirmed the growing public interest in initiatives that combine research, interactive learning, and real-world action through games. Through open dialogue, the need to strengthen climate literacy was highlighted, along with the importance of building long-term collaboration networks between research institutions, policy initiatives, and citizens.
