Athena, a pioneer research center in inclusive AI for people with disabilities

When the research in new technologies creates opportunities for everyone

03-02-2026

Athena is a pioneering institution in research and innovation, with a strong commitment to the values of inclusion and the use of AI for the benefit of society. For this reason, it could not but take a leading role in the call for collaboration within the framework of the project “People with Disabilities as Pioneers in AI” implemented by the non-profit organization SciFy (https://www.scify.org), with the support of the Latsis Foundation and Metlen. This project is a shining example of an initiative aimed at training people with disabilities in data annotation, a process that “trains” AI models.

Athena, through the “Language and Robots” group of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP), had the pleasure of integrating people with disabilities into its research activities by assigning them a data annotation task focused on linguistic categorization, carried out via a specially designed web interface with an emphasis on accessibility. Through the program, participants acquired new skills at the cutting edge of technological developments, creating opportunities for professional integration and employment.

This project will continue in the near future on a more systematic basis, with a focus on selected annotation tasks.

The video presenting the results of the project is available here.
