The 50th International Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB 2024), held in Guangzhou, China from August 26 to 30, marked a significant milestone in the field of data management. As a leading international forum for data management and scalable data science, VLDB 2024 featured a diverse range of presentations, including research talks, keynote addresses, panels, tutorials, and workshops.

Athena Research Center via its Information Management Systems Institute (IMSI) made notable contributions to the conference. Achievements included receiving the Best Paper Award for the innovative work on high-velocity stream analytics. The paper, "OmniSketch: Efficient Multi-Dimensional High-Velocity Stream Analytics with Arbitrary Predicates" co-authored by Minos Garofalakis, Wieger R. Punter, and Odysseas Papapetrou, was recognized for its significant impact on the field.

In addition to this accolade, IMSI/Athena presented three key conference papers addressing various aspects of data management. These included advancements in time series caching, benchmarks for natural language to SQL systems, and visualization-aware techniques. These contributions were well-received and highlighted the ongoing commitment to advancing data science technologies.

The conference also featured a tutorial by Athena on optimizing workload placement in heterogeneous CPU-GPU systems. Furthermore, Athena's involvement extended to the organization of the 7th International Workshop on Big Data Visual Exploration and Analytics (BigVis 2024) and the presentation of workshop papers on adaptive indexing and automated tabular data analysis.

The presence of Georgia Koutrika on the VLDB Endowment Board of Trustees and Manolis Terrovitis's role on the VLDB24 Review Board emphasized Athena and IMSI's broader influence within the data management community.

The overall participation included:
  • Three (3) main conference papers:
    • Wieger R. Punter, Odysseas Papapetrou, Minos Garofalakis. OmniSketch: Efficient Multi-Dimensional High-Velocity Stream Analytics with Arbitrary Predicates
    • Stavros Maroulis, Vassilis Stamatopoulos, George Papastefanatos, Manolis Terrovitis. Visualization-aware Time Series Min-Max Caching with Error Bound Guarantees
    • Yi Zhang, Jan Deriu, George Katsogiannis-Meimarakis, Catherine Kosten, Georgia Koutrika, Kurt Stockinger.  ScienceBenchmark: A Complex Real-World Benchmark for Evaluating Natural Language to SQL Systems.
  • 1 Tutorial from ARC
    • Marcos N. L. Carvalho, Alkis Simitsis, Anna Queralt, Oscar Romero.Workload Placement on Heterogeneous CPU-GPU Systems
  • 1 Workshop organization
  • 2 workshop papers
