Alliance for Language Technologies - European Digital Infrastructure Consortium

Greece as a founding member

31-01-2024

The Ministry of Digital Governance, in collaboration with the Athena Research Center, has taken active steps for Greece to become a founding member of the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium "Alliance for Language Technologies - European Digital Infrastructure Consortium" (ALT-EDIC). This ensures Greece's participation in the rapidly developing field of Artificial Intelligence and equitable digital support for the Greek language. The initiative for creating ALT-EDIC originated from a consortium of European member countries, with France as the coordinating country.

ALT-EDIC will establish reliable mechanisms to ensure that data owners and providers have full control over their data, its terms of availability, and usage, in full compliance with European Union rules and values, creating conditions for a real data economy. The contribution of ALT-EDIC to the development of AI applications relying on large language models, specifically for languages with fewer speakers like Greek, is expected to be particularly significant. Through proper management of linguistic data from Greek and other European languages, the initiative aims to gather the necessary volume and create linguistic data for specialized fields with identified technological gaps, such as tourism, culture, banking, construction, transportation, justice, shipping, etc. Within the framework of ALT-EDIC's operation, the Speech Processing Institute of the Athena Research Center will coordinate national participation by providing specialized personnel, digital resources, and expertise.

In the coming period, the European Commission, through the Digital Europe program, will fund Multi-Country Projects to strengthen the creation of infrastructures for linguistic data in countries participating in ALT-EDIC. Greece's participation in ALT-EDIC creates the conditions for further development of linguistic data, resources, models, and tools for the Greek language, ensuring its equal participation in the modern digital era and technological readiness. The presence of the Greek language in the developments expected in the field of Generative Artificial Intelligence will enhance the adoption of Language Technologies by the Greek industry, the public sector, and the research community, sensitizing all stakeholders about the crucial role of linguistic data in today's economy.
