Agiatis Benardou Elected President of the DARIAH-EU Board

At Athena, we are particularly proud that another significant member of our research team has received an important recognition. Ms. Agiatis Benardou, Associate Researcher in the Digital Curation Unit of the Information Management Systems Institute at Athena and a Lecturer in the Department of Informatics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, has been elected President of the European Infrastructure DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities).
 
In her statement, Ms. Benardou remarked: "I began and continue my research journey in the field of Digital Humanities at the Digital Curation Unit of the Athena Research Center, and as President of the DARIAH-EU Management Board, I hope to expand, strengthen, and promote the Greek community of Digital Humanities further within the European and international research environment".
 
Ms. Benardou's involvement with DARIAH started in 2009, during the preparatory phase of the Infrastructure, where she worked on gathering user requirements, laying the groundwork for its future design. Subsequently, during the transitional phase and implementation phase of the Infrastructure, she was a member of the working groups DiMPO - Digital Methods and Practices Observatory and Course Registry, and she led the Community Engagement working group. Since 2017, she has co-chaired the VCC2, Research and Education Liaison. Since 2023, she has been a Director and a member of the DARIAH Board.
 
She has participated since 2012 in the team that designed and created the Greek Network of Infrastructures for Research in the Humanities DARIAH-GR/DYAS, and since 2018, she has been involved in the project team for the National Infrastructure for the Humanities and Arts and for Language Research and Innovation APOLLONIS, coordinated by the Athena Research Center with components CLARIN and DARIAH-GR/DYAS. She has also served as the head of organizing the annual DARIAH meeting held in Athens.

 

She holds a PhD in Ancient History and Archaeology from King’s College London, where she also obtained her undergraduate and master's degrees in Ancient History. Additionally, she has a second master's degree in Cultural Management and Communication from the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture at Panteion University. She has worked for over 15 years in the field of Digital Humanities and has participated in national and international initiatives as a team member, work package leader, and project coordinator. Her main interests include digital history, digital storytelling, and user requirements.
 
Agiatis Bernardou took on her new responsibilities as President of the European Infrastructure DARIAH on September 1, 2024.
