The Athens Natural Language Processing Summer School (AthNLP) returns with renewed energy for its second year, offering a unique opportunity for education and networking in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Four major organizations—the Athena Research Center, the “Demokritos” National Centre of Scientific Research (NCSR), the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh - are co-organizing the AthNLP Summer School, which is set to host over 130 students from around the world, along with leading academics and professionals in the field, at the facilities of the Demokritos in Agia Paraskevi, from September 19 to 25, 2024.
Natural Language Processing is a significant branch of Artificial Intelligence, developing methods, technologies, and large-scale data that enable computers to process, analyze, synthesize, and co-create solutions, acting as valuable assistants that interact in natural language with humans, providing continuous support in our daily activities. The most notable recent achievement in this field is generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs), areas that the summer school will focus on with specialized talks and extensive workshops.
As noted by Dr. Haris Papageorgiou, Research Director at the Institute of Language and Speech Processing (ILSP), the Athena Research Center supports AthNLP, emphasizing the strategic impact of NLP and generative AI in enhancing the productivity and outward orientation of the domestic industry while ensuring its social and human-centric character, fully aligned with our National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence and the EU regulatory framework.
This year’s AthNLP will feature leading researchers in Natural Language Processing from universities, research centers, and IT companies around the world, who will teach through lectures and workshops (see
https://athnlp.github.io/2024/speakers.html). The 130 students attending the school were selected from over 200 applications.
AthNLP 2024 is supported by numerous sponsors and academic supporters, including distinguished companies such as Google, National Bank, Accenture, Interamerican, Endeavor, Causaly, Archive, and Aegean Airlines (see

Academic supporters include the Archimedes Research Unit of the Athena Research Center and the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society (EETN).
