For a full decade, the BIP! Services suite has been in continuous production, supporting the research community at large in discovering and making sense of scientific knowledge. Ten years ago, Thanasis Vergoulis, Principal Researcher at the Information Management Sustems Institute of Athena Research Center, with his talented team, created a specialized Life Sciences search engine that has now evolved to a multidisciplinary platform for research discovery, profiling, and knowledge curation, serving a community of over 740 registered users worldwide.
BIP! Services is a suite of services designed to support researchers and other stakeholders with scientific knowledge discovery, research assessment, and other use cases related to their everyday routines. The suite comprises four services, Finder, Scholar, Readings, and Spaces, each offering unique functionalities addressed to all professionals conducting research, fostering interdisciplinary cooperation:
- Finder: an open academic search engine enhancing knowledge discovery across scientific publications;
- Scholar: an open profiling platform where researchers can build and share career summaries using diverse templates, while research assessment experts can experiment with and evaluate new profile templates in collaboration with volunteers;
- Readings: a library of user-curated publication lists that supports literature organization and note-taking; and
- Spaces: a service for creating tailored search engines designed to meet the needs of specific organisations or communities, connecting them with curated knowledge bases.
To celebrate this 10-year milestone, in the coming months, the BIP! Services team will publish a series of blog posts exploring each service in depth, its motivation, design, and use cases, along with user stories and testimonials, highlighting how BIP! Services support real research journeys.
