Prokopis Prokopidis was recently elected to the position of Special Scientific Staff Grade A at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP) of Athena Research Center, following a long-standing contribution to research and the development of language technologies for the Greek language.
He has been working at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing since 1998 as a computational linguist, contributing consistently to the development of language resources and natural language processing tools. He holds a degree from the Department of English Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a Master’s degree in Computational Linguistics from the University of Essex.
Through his research activities, he has contributed to the development of important language resources and tools for the analysis of Greek texts, as well as to the recent national effort to develop large language models for the Greek language, strengthening the presence of Greek in modern artificial intelligence technologies.
As he notes, his goal remains the strengthening of this collective research effort towards producing innovative research and reliable language technology tools with emphasis on the Greek language.
On the occasion of Mr Prokopidis’ election, the Director of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of Athena Research Center, Dr Vassilis Katsouros, noted: “Mr. Prokopis Prokopidis has long been one of the pillars of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing, with significant contributions to the development of language resources and natural language processing tools for Greek. His election to the position of Senior Scientific Technical Staff (Grade A) formally recognizes his long-standing and multifaceted contribution, as well as the key role he continues to play in the strategic development of high-quality data and infrastructures. His contribution is crucial in supporting high-quality training and evaluation datasets for modern language models, which form the foundation for the reliability of contemporary artificial intelligence systems and significantly strengthen Greek research in this field. I wish him every success in continuing his work, which honors the Institute and strengthens the international presence of Greek language technology”.
