Athena becomes a member of CoARA

13-03-2024

The Athena Research Center proceeded to sign the Agreement for the Reform of Research Evaluation and submitted a membership application to the CoARA Coalition, which supports and coordinates the efforts of organizations maintaining research assessment policies and/or frameworks at European, national, and global levels. On Tuesday, 05/03, CoARA welcomed Athena as one of its +600 members and among the +700 organizations that have signed the aforementioned Agreement. Greece is the first Signatory of the Agreement in Greece.

The Athena representaion in CoARA is as follows:
  • Legal entity: Yiannis Emiris, with Katerina Pastra as alternate representative
  • Procedural: Elli Papadopoulou, with Thanasis Vergoulis as alternate representative
The signing of the agreement represents a commitment that Athena will proceed with the implementation of, at least, the following 4 key commitments:
  1. Recognition of the different roles and professions in research
  2. Recognition of the contribution of researchers and research professionals to activities beyond publication, such as data production or collection, peer review, etc.
  3. Avoidance of using Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and h-index as quality criteria for research impact
  4. Avoidance of using ranking references of research organizations in research assessment (e.g., Times Higher Education).
This development strengthens Athena's leading role in shaping, adopting, and implementing Open Science actions at European and national levels.
