Nestor Tsirliganis received his Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1986 and continued his studies, under a Fulbright Scholarship, at The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (U.S.A.) from where he received a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Science in 1987 and a Ph.D. Degree in the same field in 1995. He specialized in nuclear measurements with emphasis on instruments and methods for neutron detection and measurement. During his graduate studies (1986-1994) he held a Research Assistant Appointment at the Nuclear Data Laboratory and a Teaching Assistant Appointment at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences of The University of Michigan. During the 1996–1998 period he worked as an Associated Research Scientist in various projects regarding environmental dosimetry, at the Nuclear Engineering Laboratory of the Democritus University of Thrace. In 1999, as an external consultant, planned and organized the Archaeometry Laboratory of the Cultural and Educational Technology Institute–CETI (today Institute of Language and Speech Processing–ILSP/Xanthi Branch) in Xanthi, for the development and use of scientific techniques in order to extract archaeological and historical information from the cultural heritage. In 2002 he joined the Institute as Research Lecturer, Head of the Archaeometry Laboratory (today Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements Laboratory), position that holds till presently as Research Director, since 2007. In 2012, following the merge of CETI with ILSP he undertook the position of Head of the Xanthi Branch/ILSP. His research interests include the luminescence dosimetry and dating, environmental dosimetry and retrospective and space dosimetry, applications of electromagnetic radiation and nuclear measurements in materials, environmental and heritage sciences, and applications of the information technologies in heritage sciences and everyday life (agriculture, health sciences, etc.). He has more than 70 publications in international refereed journals (h-index 19) and 70 participations in international scientific conferences with published proceedings. His published work also includes 2 dissertations, 4 chapters in books, and a number of articles in electronic journals and journals of public interest. His work has more than 1000 references. He has participated as Scientific Coordinator and/or Project Coordinator in 7 national, 2 transnational, 1 European and 4 national infrastructure projects. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society, IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, ΙΕΕΕ Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society and the Hellenic Society for Archaeometry.
