Reconstructing Xanthi's Old Town: Interactive 3D Sound Experiences

Athena Research Center brings tradition to life with innovative means

18-06-2024

The rich history of the old town of Xanthi comes alive again with the help of modern digital tools, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore iconic buildings and monuments of exceptional architectural beauty. Through interactive narratives and 3D sound, visitors can hear authentic sounds of the era and travel back in time, experiencing the atmosphere of the old town.

The Athena Research Center, in collaboration with the cultural production and management company MENTOR and the company Rabbeats, is jointly implementing the modern research project "Echoes" (www.echoesproject.gr). The project aims to create and implement advanced technological instruments and approaches to produce interactive content for cultural site visitors, specifically those exploring traditional settlements.

Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the stories of iconic buildings and monuments such as the Clock Tower, the Daniel Mansion, and the Hellenic Community Club, and be transported to the atmosphere of the late 19th century. This era, known as the "belle époque" is characterized by the urban character of wealthy tobacco traders and Western influences that are connected to local culture while maintaining the essence of the East.

According to Professor of Informatics and Telecommunications at National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and scientific director of the project, Yannis Ioannidis, the goal is to create and present interactive content for visitors to cultural sites, focusing on traditional settlements, adopting the innovative methodology of experience reconstruction.

Despoina Tsiafaki, Head of the Department of Culture and Creative Industries at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing, the oldest of the institutes of the Athena Research Center with a branch in Thrace for over 25 years, points out that the experience reconstruction is based on historical sources about the life and significant events of the settlement in the past, creating a realistic world of history positioned in the actual space.

The "Echoes" project is funded by the Recovery Fund through the "Research - Create - Innovate" Action and is expected to create a unique sense of space and time for visitors, contributing to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
