In 2023, we were all astounded by the release of ChatGPT, which was soon followed by GPT-4. The field of open large language models (LLMs) saw significant growth, with new model releases, advanced training techniques, and access to new resources and methodologies for the language technology community.

 

The rapid development of open LLMs in 2023 marked a pivotal year for research and applications in Artificial Intelligence. The Institute for Language and Speech Processing closely followed these developments and embarked on the ambitious project of developing the first open LLM for the Greek language, bringing a new north wind of change (known as Meltemi)!
