How can data centers become "green"?

Dr. George Papastefanatos, Principal Researcher at the Institute of Information Systems of the Athena Research Center, spoke to Kathimerini and journalist Giannis Elafros about the growing energy challenges posed by the operation of data centers. These challenges arise due to the rapid growth of new applications in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and data science across an increasing number of sectors.

Dr. Papastefanatos, the scientific coordinator of the ARCADIA project - a collaboration between Athena and Intracom Telecom—highlighted the development of machine-learning algorithms. These algorithms predict future resource demands in a data center, aiming to optimize resource allocation across server clusters. They also enable co-execution of services to reduce energy consumption in real time (such as shutting down unused servers during periods of low demand).

The developed technology led to the creation and utilization of an internationally award-winning platform by Intracom Telecom.

As Greece has recently finalized the regulatory framework for the establishment of data centers and a surge of investments in the sector is expected, energy-saving technologies such as that of the ARCADIA project are becoming even more valuable.

Read the full details in the Kathimerini article and learn more about the technology on the ARCADIA project page.
