On 15 September 2026, Athena Research Center, coordinator of the DataGEMS project, together with DARELab, organized the workshop “From Systems to Trust: Data Management in the AI Era” at the Athens University History Museum. The event brought together researchers and experts for a day of discussion on the evolving landscape of data management in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

 

The event featured four thematic sessions focusing on Intelligent Data Systems, Talking to Data, Data Discovery, and Trustworthy Data & AI. Across eight research presentations, the sessions explored how AI is transforming data systems, enabling new forms of interaction through natural language, supporting data discovery and connection, and raising critical questions around reliability and trust.

 

The workshop concluded with the open panel discussion “Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Society”, broadening the conversation beyond the research program to the wider opportunities, challenges, and societal impact of AI. The discussion invited participants to reflect on who benefits from AI, who bears the associated risks, and the responsibilities of open research infrastructures towards the society that supports and funds them.

 

The panel brought together Dr. Thodoris Dalamagas, Director of the Information Management Systems Institute at Athena Research Center; Dr. Georgia Koutrika, Research Director at Athena Research Center and Coordinator of the DataGEMS project; Hara Vasiliadou, Cyber Security, Strategy & Commercial Solutions Director at QUALCO; Dr. Vasiliki Kotroni, Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens; and George Rakitzis, Co-Founder & CTO at Mind the Hack.
