Athena Research Center participates, via its Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMSI), in the MSCA Industrial Doctoral Network on Digital Finance (DIGITAL). DIGITAL envisions to train young researchers in R&D topics that cover the multiple disciplines required in the rapidly evolving field of Digital Finance, substantially going beyond the traditional Finance PhD education in a wide range of inter-sectoral applications, including:
  • Towards a European Financial Data Space: Focus on ensuring data quality to contribute to the EU's efforts in building a single digital market for data.
  • Artificial Intelligence for Financial Markets: Address deployment challenges of complex AI models for real-world financial issues.
  • Towards Explainable and Fair AI-Generated Decisions: Validate and extend state-of-the-art explainable AI (XAI) algorithms in financial applications.
  • Driving Digital Innovations with Blockchain Applications: Develop risk management tools related to the use of Blockchain technology in finance.
  • Sustainability of Digital Finance: Simulate financial markets and evaluate products with a sustainability component.
DIGITAL is composed of eight leading European Universities WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, University of Twente, Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Babes-Bolyai University, Bern Business School, Kaunas University of Technology and University of Naples, all ranked among the top 200 universities globally in their fields; six major international corporations Deloitte, Swedbank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Bank for International Settlements, Raiffeisen Bank, and Deutsche Bank with a significant R&D presence across Europe; three SMEs (Cardo AI, Royalton Partners, LPA Group) being some of the most innovative ones in their field; three large and internationally renowned research centers Athena Research and Innovation Center, EIT Digital and Fraunhofer Institute and two governmental agencies the European Central Bank and the Bank for International Settlements.

Athena will host four secondments of PhD students in the above fields, aiming to leverage its strong background in computational science, applied machine learning/deep learning and explainability, as well as its strong applied research projects. Athena will assist and guide these students via short term R&D projects on real-world use cases derived by a broad range of R&D and industrial collaborations Athena RC participates in or leads. Athena RC’s contributions in the network are led by its President and General Director, Prof. Ioannis Emiris.
