Through this great investment in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Algorithms, “ARCHIMEDES” is expected to play a catalytic role in creating in Greece a community of world-class scientists and engineers, which will attract investment and technological innovation. The strategic pillars of the plan are twofold: first, the selection of specific technological fields that are expected to lead to long-term economic development of high returns and intensive utilization of talent potential, and second, the cultivation of regular and seamless synergies between the Greek academic diaspora and domestic talent, resulting in the mitigation of the phenomenon “brain drain” which is strongly observed in recent years in Greece.
It is expected that “ARCHIMEDES” will immediately create new collaborations between leading universities and technology companies abroad with the respective institutions and companies in Greece, attracting internationally renowned researchers to invest a percentage of their time in domestic innovation, leading to an increase in scientific publications in the short term and in the medium term to increase the success rate in competitive research funding competitions.
Finally, in the medium term, start-ups are expected to be established in these sectors, with a high probability of acquisition by international technology companies, thus indirectly leading to the inflow of foreign capital, know-how, and access to international markets. In this way, after all, the unit will be in a state of full financial autonomy and sustainability in five years.
