Greece joins the ESFRI European RI ELIXIR as a full member - "Athena" RC with a significant role in the Greek National Note

02-10-2018

ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science resources from across Europe. These resources include databases, software tools, training materials, cloud storage and supercomputers. The goal of ELIXIR is to coordinate these resources so that they form a single infrastructure. This infrastructure makes it easier for scientists to find and share data, exchange expertise, and agree on best practices. Ultimately, it will help them gain new insights into how living organisms work.

According to the recent announcement of the BSRC “Alexander Fleming”, Greece has now become a full member of the ELIXIR bio-data infrastructure. The "Athena" Research Center has an important role in the ELIXIR-GREECE national node, aiming at building a sustainable pan-European bio-information infrastructure. As an ELIXIR Member, the Greek bioinformatics community will be able to fully integrate into ELIXIR activities and collaborate with other ELIXIR Nodes more extensively. This participation is part of the "Athena" Research Center's strategy for its presence in major international research infrastructures and a general support for their development.

ELIXIR-GR offers a collection of unique tools and databases that focuses primarily on biomedical research and marine biology are provided and will be continually expanded. Training is offered to all stakeholders in the form of hands-on workshops and web-based training courses.

Greece has been involved in ELIXIR from its inception and has already built a national ELIXIR node linking together 15 Universities and Research Centers and the Greek Research and Technology Network, is coordinated by the BSRC “Alexander Fleming”and is supported for the first three years of its operation by the NSRF 2014-2020. ELIXIR-GREECE, thanks to the collaboration of the participants, already provides a range of computational tools and databases developing a significant computational infrastructure for the Greek bioscientific community.

The sign of ELIXIR Consortium Agreement, provides the right to participate in European and international programs of ELIXIR.
