Professor Yannis Ioannidis was elected President of ACM

International distinction for the former President of Athena RC

We are pleased to announce the election of the former President of the Athena RC, Professor of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens, Yannis Ioannidis as President of the international organization ACM - Association for Computing Machinery for the next two years. ACM is the largest computer science community in the world. The President serves a two-year term starting on July 1, 2022.

An ACM member since 1983, Yannis Ioannidis has served as ACM Secretary/Treasurer (2018–2020), SIGMOD Chair (2009–2013) and Vice-Chair (2005–2009), and as a member of the ACM Europe Council, the SIG Governing Board Executive Committee, and the ACM Publications Board. He has also organized the Council’s first three summer schools on the topic of Data Science in Europe.

Yannis Ioannidis has published more than 160 articles in leading journals and conferences and holds three patents. He is the project coordinator and head of the legal entity OpenAIRE, which implements European policies for open access to research publications and research data. He is software director at the European initiative Human Brain Project and coordinator or partner in dozens of other European research and innovation projects.

In addition, he has led the creation of new international companies and spin-offs. He is a Fellow of the IEEE Scientific Organization, a member of the Academia Europaea, and holds the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award and other research and teaching awards. He is a member of the Executive Board and National Representative of Greece in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). Finally, he is a member of the  strategic management council of the Greek node of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
