Georgia Koutrika featured in ERT Documentary on AI and Christian faith

09-06-2026

Georgia (Yuli) Koutrika, Research Director at the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMSI) of Athena Research Center, appears as an expert in the documentary "In the Image of Human — Artificial Intelligence and Christian Faith", now available on ERTFLIX, the on-demand platform of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT).

Directed by Nicole Alexandropoulou, the documentary raises one of the most profound questions at the intersection of technology and theology: could the Orthodox Christian faith be reconciled with some form of artificial consciousness, if it were to exist? Through the lens of Orthodoxy, the film explores the concerns, dialogues, and debates that the rise of artificial intelligence provokes, and the effort to confront the deepest questions emerging from its development.

In her contribution to the documentary, Georgia Koutrika offers a grounded introduction to what Artificial Intelligence actually is, she explains the role of neural networks as simplified simulations of the human brain, and underlines that the explosion of AI capabilities today rests on three pillars: the algorithms themselves, the vast amounts of available data, and the computing power now capable of supporting and training enormous neural networks.

Koutrika also addresses broader societal questions raised by AI: the risk of bias and discrimination embedded in algorithms, threats to privacy and human rights, and the critical question of the role of human judgment in an AI-driven world. Notably, she reflects on the importance of all social groups (including the Church) having a voice in shaping how AI develops and is used, given that its consequences touch every aspect of human life.
